yes he does make sense. how many people love Evangelion or Naruto for absolutely no reason but that its popular and will never say anything bad about it?! i totally understand that statement
Yes, but that shouldn't apply to you unless you think you're unable to like something unless it's popular.
1- i just dont get that ol feel good vibe from this one like i did with the others
Ponyo is definitely a feel-good movie. It's got little in the way of true antagonism and it's about two cute little kids doing cute little kid things and having a cute little kid adventure, and it has a happy ending. What's not feel-good about that?
2- i heard the english version of that song...yeah not liking it
The song isn't in the movie itself. So just don't stay through the end credits. There's nothing at the end of the credits, so you don't have to stay if you don't want. I don't see why this would factor into anyone's decision of whether or not to see the movie.
3- the classsic disney bailout
I have no idea what this means. Disney and Studio Ghibli have had a long-term arrangement wherein Disney would produce dubs for and distribute Ghibli films in the US. And by all accounts, Disney has done a pretty decent job of it, too. They pour a ton of money into the dubs--for Ponyo, they have a number of big-name actors doing voices, plus they got
John Lasseter,
Kathleen Kennedy, and
Frank Marshall to be producers for the domestic version. (As I mentioned earlier, I actually enjoyed this dub, and I'm not usually a fan of dubs.
They also get the films released into a relatively large number of theaters, at least by anime standards. Most anime releases are limited to arthouse theaters, or very limited engagements at the big theaters. Ponyo was released on
927 screens in the US... that's huge for anime. Alas, it only pulled in a few million over the weekend. That's why anime doesn't get so widely released. If a Miyazaki movie can't put butts in seats, other anime doesn't stand a chance.
