Your First Ever Anime?
« on: July 17, 2009, 11:46:59 am »
I hope this one has not been done yet, but I was just wondering what anime and/or manga got you (as in all the lovely people who read the forums) into anime and/or manga (if that makes sense lol).

This is just really random and I thought about posting this question after thinking about my first ever anime I watched which made me fall in love with this type of style/art.

The first ever anime I have seen was The GetBackers. I love the GetBackers and the storyline. For some odd reason I can not think about the first manga I have read. I mean I have read so many of them. But I know for a fact that the GetBackers is what got me into all of this lol.

Well, there was a thread: What was your first manga?, but nobody's posted to that since April.  Why don't we keep that thread for talking about your first manga, and use this one for talking about your first anime.

And to stay on topic, my first anime (which I knew was anime, as opposed to something like Speed Racer when I was a kid) was Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind in the original Japanese back at MileHiCon 1986.  Thank you Jan.

First anime would be Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z. As for "real" anime it was Hellsing.

Hmm...I might sound like a real r----- saying this, but I use to watch Pokemon a lot back in the day before I even watched The GetBackers, but at the time I didn't know what anime was and didn't think that Pokemon was an anime lol.

My first exposure to anime was when I was a teenager, probably in late middle school or early high school. (My memory for these things is terrible.) I can't remember which I saw first, but it was either Ninja Scroll or Akira. I was too young to understand the implications of what "anime" meant (in fact, I'd only heard it referred to as "Japanimation" at the time) and I was certainly too young for Ninja Scroll. ;)

I'd later seen bits of anime here or there, mostly on Showtime late on Saturday nights (very infrequently, mind you) and I remember seeing Iria that way, but it wasn't until after I graduated high school that I learned what anime really was and why it was significant. It was then that I was shown Trigun, and it was an effective gateway drug. I consider that the first anime of my fandom, and it certainly made more of an impact than anything I'd seen previously (which at the time I thought of mostly as really cool cartoons that I didn't understand :P).

Lets see my first anime.  Well in all truth it was probably Maison Ikkoku, or KOR.  The first one that caught my attention though, as far as I remember (or want to remember) was Ah! My Goddess.  Way back when George started me on my path to all of this crazy stuff.

As for my first manga, that takes a little more thinking.  I'll not add why it takes much thinking as it would scare the children.
I think one of the Sailor Moon mangas was the first that I ever owned, though that was originally to give to my sister.  When I started getting lots of manga (before the lack of money and need to eat kicked in) Ah! My Goddess, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Maison Ikkoku were probably in the first purchase.  Now of course I only buy Ah! My Goddess and waste all of the rest of my money on take out.  It will be worth it though.  One day I too will get a wrong number, and then I will be hung up on almost immediately.

I'll throw in Tobor the 8 Man as my fathers first, just because that show is great.

Our first anime was Project A-KO^^  We were watching that when we were around 2 years old (or according to our father)  Sad~ we haven't even finished all three movies yet XD

As for Manga, I think it might have been Card Captor Sakura.  That or Dragon Knights :]

Well I guess Voltron, but it's a blur about what I could've seen back when I was younger.  Definitely know the two series that I recognized as anime first were Ronin Warriors and Sailor Moon.

Haha Sailor Moon. I actually thought a lot of people on this forum would have said Sailor Moon since it was most of my friends first anime lol. I just never really got into Sailor Moon.

First anime? probably "Battle of the Planets" (Gatchaman) followed by "Warriors of the Wind", which was the edited English dub of "Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind". I originally thought it was French.

First anime that I knew was anime? The original Streamline dub of "AKIRA" at the Ogden Theater (if that gives you a timeframe), followed by Ranma 1/2 episodes 1-3 fansubbed. Soon after that I went to a Denver Anime International meeting and it was all downhill from there  ;)

First ever anime, "The Fantastic Adventures of Unico," and "Unico and the Island of Magic." My father (who is the BEST in the world) and I used to watch it together, after all he got me into anime in the first place to urk my mother who watching boring old "All My Children" (Soap opera)

First 2 manga, believe it or not were "Vampire Princess Miyu" and "Furlough" (That is manga and I will defend it to the death of my social life!)

Hmmm.... My first animes would probably be Sailor Moon, Speed Racer, and Dragon Ball Z when I was a little kid (probably in, like Kindergarten or 1st grade). I obviously didn't get much into anime until I was in 7th grade... Then I came across Tokyo Mew Mew (or Mew Mew Power, as the dub calls it...) on TV one morning. Been hooked ever since~ XD

But, after watching all of Sailor Moon in Japanese... then trying to watch it in English... I have to say, they did a terrible job... Why do they change names for dubs? And, really, the voices didn't fit well AT ALL. DX

First anime ever was Unico, though I didn't know it as anything different than my 'cartoons' at the time. I don't remember how young I was, early elementary at the oldest.

First anime that was watched as an anime was DragonBallZ when I met my (now) husband.

First anime I watched and picked on my own was InuYasha. I was able to watch it with my mom.

First anime watched I didn't know were anime, but my brother got me up to watch them with him early early early before school, but were things like Voltron, Robotech, and Gigantor.  Followed by the early morning bouts of Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball (all around 6am, before they were popular titles).

First one that I watched that I knew was anime...?  Umm... maybe something from the SciFi Anime weeks that were run, something like Demon City Shinjuku or Cashan or Lily C.A.T...  Of course it might have been something like Lensman or even the Oh My Goddess! OAVs.  All of them because my uncle though, since I'd just sit and watch them with him.

I was young into anime, so it's hard for me to remember the exact first one, but I knew anime as it was early since my uncle did the old send away blank VHS for copies of fan subbed titles. :)
