I want YOU for Nan Desu Kan!
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:29:11 pm »
You! That's right, you! No, not the guy behind you....well, actually, him too! We need all the people we can get to volunteer for this year's NDK!

But BakuDan, why should I volunteer for NDK?

Why, I'm glad you asked me that! The most important reason to volunteer for NDK is because you love the con, and want to see it be a success. The more people we have helping all weekend, in every area, the more smoothly the convention goes for everyone. However, because we know you like schwag, we also have free stuff you can only get by volunteering for NDK. Volunteers that work four hours get a Volunteer lanyard, to display your pimpin' NDK Badge on. After 8 hours, you get a Volunteer water bottle, because you've obviously been working hard, and you're bound to be thirsty. After 12 hours, we have coupons good for $5 off any NDK schwag from the NDK Merchandise table, because we couldn't decide what else to give you, so you can pick one out yourself. And after 16 glorious hours, you get a free pass to next year's convention. That's right - work 16 hours, and next year's badge is on us.

Sounds pretty good! What areas of the convention can I work in?

Well, we want to give everyone a chance to work the areas they'd like to work in, but some areas just don't need any extra help, while others always need someone. When you sign up to volunteer, the Volunteer Coordinator will ask what area or areas you'd like to work in, and do his best to get you over there. Other times, some areas may desperately need your immediate assistance, and he may send you off to help them keep everything together until the emergency passes. Some people don't have a preference, and that's cool, we'll keep you busy as long as you want to work.

Say! If I work long enough as a volunteer, could I end up on Staff?

There's a real possibility! Quite a few of our current Staff started as volunteers, and through their long work hours and tireless dedication managed to attract the attention of an Area Head and eventually got promoted to Staff. Not everyone will get the chance to move up to Staff, but not everyone wants to, either. Some people are content to just chip in for a few hours, and then spend the rest of the weekend enjoying the con, and that's okay too. We'll take all the help we can get.

So, how do I sign up?

You start by sending me a private message over the forums or an email to ndkbakudan@gmail.com, and including the following information:

  • First Name: Gotta have it
  • Last Name: Gotta have this too
  • Handle: If you want people to know you as Spud or Goober, this is where you tell us
  • Street Address: If we find your lost wallet, where would you like us to send it?
  • City, State, ZIP: Same question
  • Phone Number: If you have more than one, feel free to give them all, but definitely include one you actually answer
  • Email Address: This is very important, a majority of the con's communications are done by email
  • Top Three Areas You'd Like To Work In: Security, Registration, Logistics, Video, VGR, Dealers....we make no promises, but we'll try...

Wait...what are you going to do with all this information?

I'm going to put it on a list, and keep it very secret. Seriously, none of this information will be shared with anyone, and we won't use it to spam you or anything. We're cool like that. But we absolutely have to have a way to get ahold of you on a regular basis. If your contact info changes during the year, please keep us updated.

You know, I think I volunteered at a previous NDK.

Great! Welcome back! Please be sure to mention that in the email or message you send me, and what work you did for us previously.

So, I know I don't look it, but I'm actually under 18. Can I still volunteer?

Of course! Young, strong backs are always needed, but you will have to get permission from a parent or guardian, and there is a form for them (and you) to fill out and sign and bring with you to the con.

Alright, I'm all signed up. Sooo.....what now?

Once you're registered and on the volunteer list, you'll get a monthly email from me or the Volunteer Coordinator letting you know what's happening for this year's con, what to expect from the volunteer experience, and general reminders that we still remember you and still love you and look forward to seeing you at this year's convention.

I have a question about volunteering. Should I post it in this thread?

Absolutely, because someone else is bound to have that same question, but they're too shy to post it. Since you're so charming and outgoing and good-looking, you can post it here and everyone gets the answer they need.

Should I sign up by posting my personal info in the thread?

No no no!! Remember, don't post any personal information in the forum threads. Just send me an email or private message, and I'll get you hooked up.

Thanks BakuDan!

No my friend, thank YOU for volunteering for NDK!  ;D

When volunteering can you still cosplay?
I'd love to volunteer, however I am not staying at the hotel so changing into street clothes into my costume would be a lot of trouble.
Is this possible or not?

You certainly can, although we do advise people not to wear anything that might make it difficult for you to work. Some areas require sitting down for long periods, others require you to travel back and forth across the hotel a lot possibly carrying things, so you'll want to consider what you're wearing for those times. I'm personally going to be in costume at least part of the convention, so you're allowed to be as well. ^_^

I have a tendency to cosplay the entire length of the convention, and it hasn't caused me any problems yet. ^_^  Then again, I was working in the video rooms (ie, lots of sitting, not no much heavy lifting. XD)

You can if you like, although the Reg guys usually send me a report with who filled that out as well. This week they're uber-busy since we're coming up on the end of pre-reg so it'll be a bit before they have time to breathe, much less send me a report. Sending it to me twice never hurts. ^_^

Questions because I'm "charming and outgoing and good-looking":
-26 days till the con... are you still in need of Volunteers?
-Can you work less than 16 hours for a discount on a badge instead of getting *cough*worthless*cough* swag?
-Is the free pass only for next year, or could it be applied to a con 2 or 3 years down the line?
-For the top 3 areas do we pick 3 of "Security, Registration, Logistics, Video, VGR, Dealers" or were those examples and one could list other things?
-Can you volunteer services?  I do freelance motion graphics, web/ interactive design, and illustration.  And I'm mighty fine at giving back rubs.  =p
- This is hypothetical, but if you were doing a panel, could that time be counted towards volunteer hours?

~Thanks

Yep. Always.

Sorry, no.

I believe it's good for the following year only.

You can pick any three departments at NDK. Those were just examples. (There are a few departments where we don't use volunteers, however, like guest services.)

Oh, certainly. For example, our web team really doesn't do much during the con... their work takes place throughout the year. If you've got some thoughts as to how you'd like to apply your skills to NDK, we'd love to hear them!

Hm, not sure about this one. I'll have to look into that...

No, time spent doing a panel is not counted towards volunteering hours.

All of Greg's other answers were correct.

If you wanted to sign up as a volunteer for next years con and not this year, can we still send the message now? Do we just post a note in the email?

You can but the head of volunteers may not get back to till a few months after this years convention.

Mary,

I am still getting all the email systems hooked up to go towards me, but if you are interested, I'll go on ahead and put your name on my list for next year!

Thanks!

I've been volunteering for several years now. Fun, exhausting... Helps give back a little to the con. I also assist @ SF & Wonderfest. No, not Wonder Festival, Wonderfest. In Louisville... Kentucky.

I highly recommend it just so long as folk realize the job comes first.
Well, ya see, I'm not saying that I've been everywhere and I've done everything, but I do know it's a pretty amazing planet we live on here, and a man would have to be some kind of FOOL to think we're alone in THIS universe.

You can volunteer at 15. You just have to get your parents to sign a waver (I belive). You may also need permission from the directors. Your best bet would be to PM one of them or volunteers.

That is correct!  Actually, this is something that is rather important:

We will accept volunteers from 14 to 17 with a Parent or Guardian's signature.  For legal reasons, every volunteer must sign out waiver, for those under 18, the person who must sign it is your Parent or Guardian.

I'm sorry for those of you 13 and younger, but we can't legally put you folks to work.

Please be prepared when you come up to the desk to sign up you will need to have your parent or guardian there at the table with you.  We can't give you the waiver to take to the car or to your room... It must be signed in front of a member of the Volunteers staff. It's legal stuff, I don't like it any more than you folks. (You can blame the McDonalds Coffee woman for this... I do!  ;) )

I was wondering, since I have already signed up for next NDK and I signed up to be a volunteer on the online registration, is there anything I need to give or send to you? Like info or what not.
