Artist of NDk's 2009 Artist Row
« on: February 06, 2009, 06:02:13 pm »
This thread is NOT the place to be critical or complain, but a place for all the artists to get an idea of what other things will be available and to talk to each other about their crafts. I personally would love to get to know all the great people I am gonna get to meet and see in Artist row this yr. I'm Kimi aka Squeaky Moonkin. Yes I spelled my forum sn wrong X_x. I will be there with neko ears and tails and hopefully a nice handful of collars available as well. I'm coming from Utah and have been working on my crafty arts for awhile now (can't recall exactly how long @_@) . If you are not shy and up to it, please post what you'll be selling and tell us about yourself as well.

Great idea, Moonkin! <3

I'm Shelly Rodriguez, AKA Shellypants. :)

I'll be selling original, handcast resin collectible art toys, self-published artbooks, tee shirts, sculptures, large-format prints, buttons and keychains, among other things. I love creating cute animals and monsters, though I'll have a fair mix of that plus original character work and fan art. :)

My 'day job' is working in the video game industry as a 3D/Concept Artist.

I'll also be coming from Utah - where do you live, Moonkin? We should meet up!

No way your also from Utah and in the video game business? My husband is in the same field though hes a programmer. What company do you work for. My hubby was at Fall Line, but I believe they are gonna merge Fall Line back into just being Avalanche. I am residing in Midvale. LOL and my "day job" consist of working at a dental office as an assistant.

Oh weird! Small world! :D

I used to work at Fall Line over a year ago, as an intern. I'm at EASL now. :) I heard about the merge & layoffs @ Fall Line... good to hear that your husband wasn't among them.

I'm in Bountiful. :D

Lol this is so great, I was totally going to ask you if you wanted to do this XD
Well, I'm not sure about ALL the things I'll have, but for sure I'll have: Felt Costume Wings, prints (original characters mostly, some fanart maybe), probably keychains, bookmarks and a few other things. There's still a long time to plan, you never know what idea might pop up later on ^_^
I actually live near Denver, in Arvada which is like....45 minutes from the convention =]

Yay, I am so glad you responded on here. I was actually speaking to a friend last night and she was telling me how she saw this amazing artist last year who did all sorts of wings. I wonder if that was you XP. Now we just need the other artist to find this thread and join the fun ^_^. I actually took a gander at your dev art gallery. I'm quite impressed with your wings. Looks like a lot of patience and precision is involved in making them. I just spent about 5 hours properly stuffing tails yesterday X_X. That's probably the most tedious part, right up there with doing the ears. My ears take such small stitching by hand and machine. What would you say is the most time consuming step or steps int he craft you create?

Aw XD
Yeah, it might have been me. As far as I know I'm the only one in AA (or maybe even the dealers room) who sells costume wings.

What would you say is the most time consuming step or steps int he craft you create?

The most time consuming is actually cutting out all the feathers for the wings x_x It makes for some nasty hand cramps, since each wing (no matter the size) has about 130-160 pieces to prep. Gluing everything together takes a while, and sewing the wire in is pretty tedious [and painful, I'm so clumsy XD] If I'm going at a good pace I can get a pair of wings done in about 10-12 hours.

Hmmm, which reminds me. I need to start figuring out what exactly I need to make. Of all the wings I brought last year, my favorites didn't sell, so I guess I'm not sure what exactly people want. I might have to post a thread about that later on as some sort of "wing questionnaire" lol

How long would you say it takes you to make a neko set?

I sort of ran into he same issue at Utah's Anime Banzai. I had like 3-4 tails that I wasn't 100% pleased with and oddly enough they sold first @_@. I think a forum poll to see what people would find visually appealing would help. I know that i leaned over time sticking to the basics of black and white tails is what sells best for me. I still make a few eccentric and stylish models, but stick tit he basics more than anything else. If you were to do a poll of some sort I think Size would have al ot to do with it. As much as large wings are awesome, some people may run into take home issues (space in the car, whether they flew into town) that sort of thing.

Creation time...it all varies really. The head bands are a 2 day process.  I originally use to by a certain type from Wallmart which were covered in a fabric sleeve, then removed the material from them. From there then use goo-b-gone to remove the glue that kept the material on. Then lacquered them black and then from there a full 24 hours period of  no touch just let them set process. Other than that I can cut, pin, sew, stuff, fluff and finish in one day if I go non stop 5 hour process give or take. I really should time myself sometime to see for sure.

Last yr I bought new head bands that already came black. I figured this would save me some time right? Well they turned out to be a bit larger in width and so I had to alter my ear pattern. X_X. That was quite the nightmare. I'm not sure if its the band or just certain furs  yet, but the first set I tried to make with the new bands did not sit flush against the top of my head wig head. So I need to try make a few others with the new band and other faux furs I have in stock. If I learn thats a no go, then  it's back to the origional process which Is gonna be tedious@_@

LOL probably more info than you wanted.

Greetings, all
I'll be in the Alley as usual selling original comics and art, and [hopefully] original handmade dolls and figures. I've always liked making props for costumes [i have sold handmade wands in the past] and i want to branch out into more anime based costume props but i think that's another year in the future. I've always wanted to make a line of masks, for instance.

Thanks for asking,
gg

A line of masks would be quite cool. Ah so you've made wands in the past, thats impressive. How long have you been doing comics for? LOL I love your gypsy Girl shore dealing with the fans. Your cover art is awesome ^_^

You're right, that's probably the biggest problem. Smaller is probably better - although there was a black and white pair that I wore while sitting at the table http://thepariah-kitty.deviantart.com/art/Felt-Wings-Black-and-White-68700506 and everyone seemed to like that one best.

Hmm, I sense a black and white theme going on here between the wings and tails lol

Ah, Piriah Kitty, some day I hope to buy a pair or two from you when I'm not a broke ass college student. (Unless you would somehow be interested in $75 worth of barter XD) Beautiful work.

Anyway, I'm Terra, and will be there again this year with Studio fae X. Mainly the same stuff as always (Chibwees, Prints, buttons, books) but we're hoping to add keychains, charms, book marks, and debut a short doujinshi this year at NDK :D

My group is Whimsical Entropy, last year we had art, book marks, keychains, origami boxes and jewelry, potions, fingerless gloves, jewelry, soot, dragons, and a few other things. This year we'll have some origami, the other stuff, and two different artists instead of just one.
