Must-See Anime?
« on: September 17, 2008, 10:54:55 pm »
OK...for those of you who got to talk with me a bit, you know that I am what the industry likes to call a 'newbie'.

Go ahead...throw fruit or something.  I'm tough.

Now, as I was getting to, I have only seen just a small handful of anime, and would like to know the anime that you would recommend.

Now, before this forum gets out of hand, I only have a small rule to follow: NO SPOILERS, NO LINKS, and NO LIES!

I make no promise that I will get to watch this anime, as my local rental store may not carry it, and my wallet has limits, but I will do my best.

[modbreak]Changed title to no longer be all CAPS.  Please keep titles in alternating cases for readability.[/modbreak]

Yuyu Hakusho is and will always be a good, classic anime that isn't over-"shoved down our throats" by the american industry, but at the same time is well known enough to be easily found and accessed. It's good for girls and guys alike and it's long, but not too long lol. And personally my favorite anime ever :)

Cowboy Bebop is also always a good one too, I actually don't know anyone that doesn't like Cowboy Bebop.

One of my personal favorites that I find most should see is Full Metal Panic. Watch Full Metal Panic then jump onto Fumoffu and finally the Second Raid. It's in the genre of Action, Mecha, Romance, and Comedy.

At least watch Rurouni Kenshin as well if you like samurais. Watch the first OVA Trust & Betrayl. After that watch the first 2 seasons of the TV. When that is done with...read the manga at volume 18 onwards. Possibly watch Reflections but, IMO skip it.

Then Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven't already along with RahXephon. Take your pick on this one since most will vary on opinions.

Sorry to the mods for the title.  It won't happen again.

As for Netfilx, that's a splendid idea.

I second Cowboy Beebop and Spirited Away whole-heartedly.

Howl's Moving Castle is also good - fairy tale type - for added fun, read the book that it is based on for comparison.
Samurai Champloo if you like action/comedy.  Slayers is also good for the action/magic/comedy group.
Azumanga Daioh is really good if you like silly stuff, but not off the wall bizarre.

If you want off the wall bizarre and humorous, try Excel Saga or Pani Poni Dash!  I only recommend these, though, to people who like the really strange, non sequitur type of humor or progression of events.  If you don't like random, definitely not for you.

xxxHolic is also a good one that I've been following lately, but falls into the 'I like CLAMP/I don't like CLAMP' trap that people fall into.  Not everyone goes for it.

start with the classics:

any and all miyazaki/studio ghibli
ghost in the shell
original dragonball
sailormoon
macross
the gundam movies (not the series)
zeta gundam
captain harlock (or herlock, as matsumoto stated back in 2000)
the satoshi kon movies (perfect blue, tokyo godfathers, millennium actress, paprika)
any/all the studio pierrot magical girl series, if you can get them (creamy mami, magical emi, wedding peach, etc.)
dirty pair
cutey honey
old takahashi, namely ranma, urusei yatsura, maison ikkoku
wings of honneamiase (or, as i call it, wings of honey mayonnaise)

it's always good to start with the classics, to get a good idea of what sort of series you like. pretty much all series afterwards owe much to their look/feel/style to these shows.

if you're interested in more modern shows, and by modern, i mean anything post-1995, here's a list:
cowboy bebop
trigun
fullmetal alchemist
chobits
ah my goddess (the movie is excellent)
voices from a distant star
excel saga
azumanga daioh
ghost in the shell: stand alone complex
evangelion (with certain warnings: some people love this show, i personally don't. it did, however, change the anime industry forever. if you're over 25, you may not like it much, either. when i watched it in my mid-late 20's, all i could think of was, "if you don't stop crying, i'll give you something to cry about!" it's very angsterific. i have no patience for wangst.)

we also have all these available (except for creamy mami and magical emi because they've not been released domestically) for rent at the store (gimme anime). a lot cheaper than buying.

I echo Mechawoman's and Rini's lists.   They are both wise women.  Those lists will keep you busy for a long time.

Definitely, as they're my two fav animes, makes sense to put them down here.  Steel Angel Kurumi, lots a fun!
The other, more on the serious side and such, and such a great story and character, Samurai 7.  Great anime, definitely a must watch.

I'm with MechaWoman on this.  Death Note, whether the manga or the anime has smart writing and interesting story.  Not to be left out of a list of things to watch.

I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING!

Tsubasa, they cut quite a bit out from the manga since it gets....bloodier to say the least but its really great to watch

xxxHOLiC such a fun series to watch Yuuko torture Watanuki

Loveless, cutest series I watch next to maybe Cardcaptors

Vampire Knight = win
