A Question of Anime...
« on: July 29, 2008, 12:29:55 pm »
Here's a puzzle for those who have seen more anime than I.  I married my husband knowing his knowledge of and appreciation for anime is limited.  He likes particular series, not genres or anything else.  I've been trying to find another anime series he'd like, however, it feels so hit or miss.  I see no common threads among the animes he likes.  My question is, does anyone have any thought/suggestions on either animes to try or any common threads between them? Here's the list of what he's liked so far:

Cowboy Bebop
Naruto
Pita Ten
Kaleido Star
Kogepan
Samurai Champloo
Inukami

...please help me. ; ;  I'm at a loss!  It's such a mix of genres, styles, plots, popular/unheard-of, etc, that I don't even know where to start, and I don't want to have to try 38 animes to find another he likes.

Edit:  Forgot, he also loved Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and Love Hina...after Full Metal Panic he wandered the house going "FUMOFFU!" every few minutes for weeks! XD;;

Thanks for the suggestion ^^  Sadly, I've already tried that one, and he "couldn't get into it". *cry*

How about Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex?

I would say try Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann and Busou Renkin.
I'll try to look for more later.

if you're local, come by the store (Gimme Anime). we do rentals.

otherwise, go with the classics to start with: any miyazaki movie, ranma 1/2, sailormoon, original dragonball, yamato, bubblegum crisis, dirty pair, one of the harlock series, etc.

related to the series he mentioned: wolf's rain (same staff as bebop), dragonball Z, yuyu hakusho or fighting spirit (fighting anime).

Good Lord, Pip. Not Air Gear.

When I am trying to introduce people to anime who have little knowledge and experience in the subject I go for easily likable, funny, lighthearted kind of shows. Things such as Full Metal Panic! FUMOFFU, Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemi, Golden Boy (Oh, especially Golden Boy!), Bottle Fairy, etc...

Most people have never seen Ebichu but if you can find it on the interwebs, etc, you can make any person fall in love with anime. Ask my wife.

Ten Ten was a good suggestion too. Try to avoid shows that play out life wastingly slowly. The non-otaku have no interest.

Forgot about Love Hina. LH was my gateway drug, the show that got me into it. Borrowed it from Landstander while I was going through a breakup years ago. I guess it was just the right anime at the right time.

Oh, I'm really sorry, I forgot to mention those two!  Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and Love Hina, he also loved those.  Maybe I should look into those others you recommended, since you picked out two others he liked...

If you're looking for something fun to watch that isn't too spastic, and you find he likes Excel Saga or Love Hina or other slightly silly 'situational' series, try Azumanga Daioh, that one is always fun, but not off the wall.

Otherwise, maybe Appleseed (since he liked Beebop and Champloo) for a more serious recommendation or Akazukin Cha Cha for a little sillier, or even Pani Poni Dash! for something completely off the wall - this is gonna be more spastic that Excel Saga, though so if Excel Saga is a no go, this is almost definitely a "nein!".

Pani Poni Dash! is only recommended for those with a strong constitution, though, cause, boy, does it get strange.  :D

Oh, oh!  And for a good couple of movies that I have found a bunch of people to like, Tokyo Godfathers (which is a more 'real life' story) or Paprika.  Paprika is quite a bit psychologically strange, though, so if he didn't like things like Paranoia Agent, then this is not for him.

I would suggest Hellsing, the original or Hellsing Ultimate. I like em both but ultimate is the better version.

I'm fairly eclectic as well, and when I ran the CSM anime club i ran into some favorites that everyone seemed to like.  Noir (although it doesn't have a ton of humor) and definitely Excel Saga, since it's never boring.  Read Or Die seemed to go over well and is one of my favorites, but I know a lot of folks have trouble starting it.  And I have never missed with Slayers.

No one's mentioned Trigun, so I'll be the first. It has a lot of the same qualities as some of the series mentioned.

You may want to check out Gungrave. If he's a fan of mafia movies, he'll enjoy it (skip the first episode though).
