Cowboy Bebop Live Action Film
« on: July 23, 2008, 04:30:40 pm »
(I know you guys get this a lot, but if this is in the wrong place I apologize XD)

Yes! There has been an announcement about a Cowboy Bebop live action film.

Here's the links to talkings-about:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-07-22/live-action-cowboy-bebop-film-in-development-at-fox
http://www.anime-pulse.com/2008/07/23/cowboy-bebop-live-action-film-announced/#more-398

Hilariously enough, done by the producer Erwin Stoff, who did the Matrix.

My boyfriend brought up a funny note though, who would you have to play the characters? They're so well-known, it'd be hard to find the right someone. I don't know, I doubt they'd go with any well-known names...(who's up for Man-Faye having a part? XD)

Now, if they stick to the story like they say, and get good... rather GREAT actors (both in look and acting) then this will be awesome~ Can't wait <3

Scary thing is, he kinda looks like him.  He's fail it faster than termites tearing down a stick, though.

I'm excited lets hope it won't be a dud like speed racer was. I second having man-faye having a part in the bebop flick maybe as a die hard faye admirer or as a cameo where spike or jet tries to look for faye think they found her but find man-faye.

XD That would be funny, I'm sure man-faye would be up to it if they asked him. I mean he went on "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" as man-faye...

I'm not scared, personally, unless they really mess up the actors and actresses they pick...but otherwise, this sounds awesome. Cowboy Bebop is such a well known and well liked anime, you can't go wrong with looking to it for live-action fun.

The only thing that would really upset me is if they went more for action and less for the comic action side that Cowboy Beebop tended to show.   I mean, I know that a lot of it was action, but full blown serious wasn't necessarily the feel of most of the series.  :)

yes, yes you can. i will now enumerate the many ways hollywood has, or would like to have, messed with beloved franchises:

1) tim burton was asked to direct the last superman movie. he wanted to make superman's suit see-through, like you can see to his internal organs. oh yes, and lets not forget the suit-in-the-can idea!

2) 4 words: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. if you've read the graphic novels, you know what a travesty that was. need i say more?

3) thank the gods that neil gaiman has creative control over his IP of the endless. otherwise, we'd have had a film by now about the apocalyptic battle between the good king of dreams, sandman, v. his evil twin brother, morpheus, king of knightmares!

4) actually, anything that was adapted to film that was written by alan moore. poor mr. moore. (i actually liked V for Vendetta, but that was more because of the phenomonal acting performance by hugo weaving.)

5) the new wanted movie bore almost no resemblance to the graphic novel from which it was based. the GN was utterly amoral, depraved, and delightfully hedonistic. it was about a band of super-villains, who've changed the world and destroy (one way or another) all the super-heroes. the villains now have the run of the world, and they do exactly as they please: rape, murder, destroy, all with impunity. hollywood changed it to good guys doing the "greater good". bah. the GN was superior.

6) and, the last word will be had by the inimitable neil gaiman: NG: Yes. It really is this thing of executives loving the smell of their own urine and urinating on things. And then more execs come in, and they urinate. And then the next round. By the end, they have this thing which just smells like pee, and nobody likes it.*

how can a bebop movie be good? it's got a sad ending! hollywood can't have sad endings! they also can't have amoral characters. everyone must be the good guy. what are they going to do with faye? they're going to have her played by some brainless, flavor-of-the-month, talentless bimbo. i can only hope that this ends up in production he11, like the sandman movies.

You got a good point.  Even take a Stephen King novel adapted to film.  Now, in the old days, horror films thrived on unhappy endings.  In the movie Cujo, the boy is saved from the rabid dog, but in the book, he dies. I think that's a prime example.

The worst part about it would be that they will probably not get Yoko Kanno to do the soundtrack, instead replacing it with whatever flavor-of-the-month bands they can get. And if we're really unlucky, whatever bimbo-of-the-month they get for Faye would have at least one song.

Oh no... not again. Okay, I can understand why Hollywood adapted Speed Racer into live-action (that story is older than Cowboy Bebop, meaning more people were aware of SR, even if they weren't otaku). While CB is hughely popular and known in the otaku world, its not really known with mainstream audiences. The producers, to increase audience numbers, will more than likely push it as a family-freindly action film and gear it to kids (imagine seeing poorly-articulated Spike action figures in the toy section and "My Walkin' Einstein" battery-operated walking dog >.<). Also, they'll probably remove much of the story's human emotion in lieu of highlighting action sequences.

CB is good enough already - why does Hollywood want to ruin another story by adapting it to live action? -.- The question is rhetorical.

I understand the question is rhetorical, but still, here's the reason: Many people won't see an animated film unless it's with their kids. No matter how much you may push something like Bebop, the mainstream audience is going to see it's a cartoon first and refuse to see it. We could have easily had Spiderman and Batman and Superman movies well before now, but because they would be animated, only a select group would go see them. It's an unfortunate fact.

While it may snag new fans i think it would have to be the worst movie ever to kill off old fans. We'll all run back to the anime just to get the bad taste out of our mouths.

hmmmm....  I am torn between wanting to see a live-action Bebop and wishing it isn't going to happen.  It could possibly turn out well.

I, for one, am not expecting it to materialize.  It'll sit in development hell for God-knows-how-long...maybe, if we're lucky, we'll see something in five or six years.

One of the main reasons speed racer sucked was that warner bros. Marketed the movie as a kid movie I don't think the wachowski's wanted that since speed was the wachowski's faves. Lets hope who gets Bebop don't let the movie company market it as a kid show which it ain't. When dark knight was made, the studio let the creator make his movie his way thats what separated this batman from the others. Hopefully the creator gets all control of bebop not the movie company.
