Hey guys this just came out this week!
SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITY
with the National Ice Core Laboratory, Denver Federal Center
Project Description
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) is the nation’s premier repository for storing, curating and studying ice cores recovered from ice sheets, ice caps, and glaciers of the world. During the summer of 2010 Principal Investigators, their technicians, and their graduate and undergraduates students will come to NICL to process the WAIS Divide ice cores. The WAIS Divide core processing line (CPL) will begin approximately on June 1 and end about August 20. The CPL is a sampling event performed at the NICL where ice is sequentially sampled in order from the top downward. Multiple meters of core are processed in order as opposed to Discrete Sampling.
Additional students are required for this CPL to provide necessary help in order to process the sample load in the given timeframe.
Required Expertise/Skills
Good manual dexterity is required. The student must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. The student needs to be able to stand for long periods of time. Interest in solving puzzles is helpful. Student must be detail oriented with some research and organizational skills to process numerous pieces of ice core according to the ice core cut diagram.
Work Environment
The work is performed in the NICL freezer under extreme conditions – the temperatures range from -24o C in the Exam Room to -36o C in the Main Storage. The lab setup requires a lot of standing with some bending, reaching, and heavy lifting to unpack, cut, process, and pack up the valuable Antarctic ice cores. The Student will be working in these extreme conditions for up to 8 hours but there will be breaks during this time. There will be a couple of work shifts established. The early shift will begin at 7 am and end at 4 pm. The last shift will begin at 9 am and end at 6 pm. Shift determination will occur once we have a complete staff.
Compensation
Compensation is commensurate with the level of education and experience, as follows:
$12.64/hr. for a student who has completed one year of college with no experience, up to $17.31/hr. for those with a BA or BS degree.
The Student is responsible for all costs of transportation within the commuting area. The Federal government does not provide housing, meals, or other living expenses while working at the principal duty station. Should travel be required to a duty station location outside the commuting area, the Federal government would be responsible for transportation, meals, and lodging costs.
