My favorite moment was probably the sensation of arriving at my first NDK, long time ago, watching a ninja cross the street to get to the hotel. I remember I had felt such a rush, seeing everyone cosplaying as my fav characters, and the fact I could recognize them all made me uber happy

And I have to agree with The_Envious_Elric, with walking through the atrium area and witnessing all the wall scrolls and such hung up on the balconies, listening to the guys playing Sephiroth's theme music on the piano and observing the hundreds of costumes people made that have just as big as an obsession with anime and cosplay as I do. *Sniff* It's like a perfect world! >w< <333 Why can't every day be that perfect!? This I would def have to agree with. I love the sensation of the first day of the con. Every year I feel the same excitement driveing up, the anticipation that has built up throughout the whole year, and all of a sudden seeing someone behind you on the freeway with a crazy hair color, or the first cosplayer you see walking up to the hotel. All of the preparation and time spent on your cosplay has led up to that exact moment, and it totally pays off.

Not to be a kill-joy on this, but I would not recommend anyone follow this example. As innocent as it may seem to be, it is frowned upon and not condoned in the least. I do not know all the details, but it did not go over well with some of the powers that be.

I'm not sure when that happened but I can't imagine anything obscene like that being okay with either hotel staff or con staff.

I remember our friend Worm was discontent at not having a sleeping spot.  So he literally slept on top of the TV stand.  That was pretty funny.

To reply to this quickly, excessive or inappropriate partial nudity or public displays of affection are highly discouraged.  This applies to everyone.  It matters not whether it involves yaoi, yuri, or anything else.

That being said, back on topic...

I remember volunteering in 2000 (I think...my memory sucks, may have been 2001) at my first NDK.  I was involved with an anime club and was new to the culture, and it was a whole new world to get introduced to.  I remember marveling at everything and I bought armloads of cheap stuff from all over the Dealer Room, no matter how inane the product.  I way overspent my budget since I had no idea what to expect.  Since that year I've never looked back, and I've been Staff every year after that first.  Oh, and the first time I had Strawberry Pocky and Ramune.  Mmmmmmm.  Who would have thought they would sell Pocky in gas stations now?

If one searches NDK on youtube, however, it is obvious that these "PDA" cases occur quite frequently.  Granted, you used the words "excessive" and "inappropriate partial nudity".  Those kids removed there shirts.  There are many male cosplayers who I have photographs of wearing nothing but tight leather pants, a cat bell, and a chain around the neck.  If that isnt offenssive then, I do not see what the other kids did wrong.  As for the display of affection, they hugged.  Really?  Why can two people not hug, public or not?  I apologize for straying away from the topic...  I just got a little upset over a stunt that, in my opinion, was critisized for little reason at all.  Regardless, I am not trying to say I recommend doing such a stunt as obviously it is frowned upon.  Sorry again!

Go ahead and PM me and I can tell you anything you need to know and discuss it offline.  The short of it is that shirts are required at the con.  Also, there have been other incidents of more than just hugging.  Calling it "that time" at the con certainly doesn't narrow it down.  I've seen it every year, in fact.

Anyways, back on topic!

I had a couple memorable experiences at NDK 2005.

First was walking into the hotel only to hear someone playing Final Fantasy melodies on the piano over by the dealers room entrance. It really added to the ambiance.

Next, it was Friday and I went to check out the Magical Girl panel. The panelist never showed, so some guys whipped out their laptop and started watching FFVII: Advent Children (a legit copy I'm sure =P). It was fairly new at the time and not everyone had seen it yet. Anyways, there was this older gentlemen sitting in front of me - probably in his 40s - that was practically bouncing with joy at seeing one of the cool fight scenes. At that moment I truly realized how the anime/manga culture bridges the gap between different age groups

Oh man, the memories!  Well I think everyone can agree your first NDK is always an amazing experience just because it's the first and everything is so new.  Like someone else mentioned, the first year NDK moved to the Mariott was my first year having a room and staying for the whole weekend, and it was great to have a room to relax in as well as stay for the full weekend for once.

I also love going into the atrium and looking at the wall scrolls and various items hanging from the balconies.  It's just kinda fun, like personal fan decoration to the hotel for the convention, it's great to see what stuff goes up throughout the weekend.

Last year was my first year wearing a costume.  Wasn't a particular anime character, instead I was my own created Ninja Monkey Master.  Lots of fun, simple costume but I decorated a stuffed monkey so he was a ninja monkey and carried him around.  It was my first time being glomped, and asking for my picture taken.  It definitely was cool, and made me realize how much fun cosplaying is.  Though my stuffed ninja monkey got more attention and hugs than I did...kinda jealous...but I'll be dressing up again this year as the Ninja Monkey Master, I'm so happy!

NDK 3: 1) won the karaoke contest, was molested by amanda wynn lee (and, i have the photos to prove it!). she gave me her home address, too. wish i still had that, i could make a fortune on ebay. 2) the rubber monster slumber party. won 2nd place in our godzilla impression with me being tokyo tower. 3) the first, only and last time i was in a costume contest. it wasn't the cosplay contest that was fun, it was that i got a whole bunch of people to go over to the denny's across the street for dinner afterwards.

that was also the year the AD police got pulled over by state troopers, and their car searched. their big, wooden, AD police prop-guns got them in a bit of trouble

:3 I remember the hug line! It was fun and we got sooooooooooooooooooooooooo many people in on it that we were supposed to split up and go to other parts of the con but we ended getting disbanded by staff. -_-

^_^ The one and only weekend where i can ask a total stranger to hug me and its not considered weird *at least to most of the people i asked*

NDK 06 was my 1st ndk and con and the moment I love and still do to this day seeing the cosplays in person than in magazines and tv made me interested in the art myself. And I ate pocky for the 1st time in the dealers room and finally finding out colorado has an anime con. Because then, I always thought anime cons were only in california not in colorado. The gimme anime ad on adult swim said otherwise.
