Submitted by Jinnie on June 16, 2010 at 7:14 PM

Want to see a preview of Kazha's special appearance at NDK this year? They'll be performing Tuesday, June 22 in Boulder; this is the last date of their debut US tour.

Tickets are only $8! ($10 at the door)

For tickets contact:
The Rock N Soul Cafe
5290 Arapahoe Ave., Ste I
Boulder, Colorado 80303

Kazuha Oda, Kazha’s namesake and founder, created the band in December 2008 after a successful solo career in which she released four albums in Japan and worked with pianist Bob James. Kazha features Hideki Matsushige on guitar, Yota Sato on bass and Rui Aranai on drums. From Kazuha's study of classical music and career in pop to Hideki's love of rock and fusion, as well as Yota's experience in electric and metal and Rui's admiration of R&B and jazz, their eclectic backgrounds create a fusion of cultures and musical viewpoints.

In July 2009, the band returned to their native Japan to record their first album and tour the country. Following the Sept. 30, release of the first EP, “Breathe Through Your Dreams”, on major Japanese label Victor Entertainment, the band launched their Asian tour in Nov. 2009. Kazha played some of the biggest music festivals in Japan and Korea, including Metal Goddess in Japan and Fire Rock Festival at Sangsangmadang Concert Hall, produced by major labels in Korea.

Kazha will open for echostream at NDK 2010's Friday night concert.

AMV submissions for NDK 2010 now open

Submitted by Greg Hines on May 22, 2010 at 9:23 AM

Preparation for NDK 2010 is in full swing, and our AMV Contest is a big part of that. We've got some big changes planned for this year that we're excited about. We'll show once again why our AMV Contest is widely considered to be one of the best in the country.

But for there to even be an AMV contest, we need you to submit your entries to us! This year we've got a new way for you to submit your AMVs: using our new online submission form (JavaScript required). The form has fields to collect all the information we need about your AMV, so please include all the detail you can. If you have multiple AMVs to submit, please fill out the form once for each of them.

Before you submit your AMVs to us, though, please be sure to read the rules. If you're an old hat at this, the rules may be pretty familiar to you. But for new editors especially, it's important to read through and follow the rules to ensure that your AMV isn't rejected.

The deadline for submitting your entries is midnight on August 22.

First round of guest announcements!

Submitted by Jinnie on May 15, 2010 at 8:37 PM

May 31 is the last day to pre-register for $40! Here's an in-progress list of what you'll be seeing this year.

Live Music!

You asked for it! NDK 2010 will kick off Friday night with our first-ever full-blown rock concert, featuring New Jersey-based echostream. LA/Japan-based Kazha will make a special appearance during their nationwide tour to open the show. On Saturday, echostream will also give an encore performance at Cosplay halftime.

Voice Actors

By popular demand, voice actress Cristina Vee will return!

And please join us in saying farewell to fan favorites and NDK family members Chris Patton and Wendy Powell at their very last NDK. This is also Chris' last convention appearance ever. :(

More news to come!

Panel submissions for NDK 2010 now open

Submitted by Greg Hines on April 25, 2010 at 3:32 AM

If you have an idea for a panel—or some other activity—that you want to run at NDK, today's the day you've been waiting for: we're ready to start accepting your proposals.

We've changed a lot of things this year regarding panels, including the submission process. To get the skinny on all the changes we've made, be sure to read the new Panel Guidelines. They're much more detailed than before and should help answer a lot more questions you might have about the process of submitting a panel, what we are and aren't looking for in a panel, and what you'll need to know if your panel is accepted. There are even pictures of the audio and video hookups you can expect to find in the panel rooms.

After you've prepared by reading the Panel Guidelines, go ahead and propose your panel today. We can't wait to see what kinds of ideas you've all come up with this year!

They've been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" as well as over 1,200 TV shows, FM radio stations, magazines, and websites. The band have developed a dedicated following through performing at anime and Asian cultural conventions. (They melted faces off in Denver @ NDK 2008!) They have shared the stage with acts such as Devo, Metallica, PJ Harvey, and Vampire Weekend. On the convention side, they have performed with Girugamesh, M.O.V.E, and Ketchup Mania.

NDK 2010 Artists Alley submissions now closed

Submitted by Greg Hines on February 15, 2010 at 1:17 AM

After two full weeks of submissions--and a fantastic turnout--we're no longer accepting applications for Artists Alley for NDK 2010. If you haven't already submitted an application, you won't be eligible for a table or for the waiting list; sorry. In about a week, we'll send out e-mails to the applicants whose applications were picked in the lottery. We won't be notifying anyone before then, so please be patient.

Thanks to everyone who submitted an application, and good luck!

Now accepting applications for NDK 2010 Artists Alley

Submitted by Greg Hines on January 31, 2010 at 11:39 PM

Applications for NDK 2010's Artists Alley are now open. We've made some big changes this year, so please read the rules before submitting an application.

The biggest change we've made this year is that we've abandoned the first-come, first-served application system in favor of a new lottery system; the frantic "midnight rush" of years past is gone forever. You now have two full weeks to submit your application. The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday, February 14.

Once all the applications are in, we'll hold a lottery to select the applicants that are awarded tables. Winners will be notified shortly after the deadline passes.

Please note that we require artists to be pre-registered for NDK before we send them contracts, so if your name is picked and you're awarded a table, be sure to pre-register before the contracts are sent out!

We've also changed the method of submitting applications. Instead of sending an e-mail with a form attached, now you just have to fill out and submit our simple Artists Alley application form at any point during the next two weeks.

If you have any comments or questions about submitting an application, please visit our NDK 2010 Artists Alley forum thread.

UPDATE: Submissions are now closed. Thanks to everyone who submitted an application.

Marriott Reservations for NDK 2010 Now Open

Submitted by Greg Hines on January 6, 2010 at 9:31 PM

It's a new year, which means it's time to start preparing for the next Nan Desu Kan. For most people, those preparations involve two primary steps: pre-registering for NDK and reserving a hotel room at the Marriott.

To pre-register for NDK, you can use our online registration system or our mail-in form. If you pre-register on or before January 31, you'll get the discounted price of $35 for the whole weekend. After that, the price goes up to $40, so pre-register before the end of the month if you can.

The Marriott also recently opened up reservations for the NDK weekend, so reserve your room online and rooms are already going fast.

There's no upfront cost for reserving a room, but a credit card is required to make the reservation. You don't have to use that credit card to pay for the hotel room when you check out of your room after the convention (you can pay with cash or a different credit card if you'd like), but if you make a reservation and fail to show up, that card will be charged for one night's stay. If it turns out you can't make it to NDK, you can cancel the room reservation at no cost at any point up to 24 hours before the reservation date to avoid that charge.

Every year, our attendees book every room at the Marriott, and every year they do it faster than the year before. So don't miss out; reserve your room today!

NDK NYE 2009 Crazy-Big Update

Submitted by Greg Hines on December 29, 2009 at 1:17 AM

New Year's Eve is nearly upon us, so we thought we'd give you one last update with everything you'll need to know about attending the NDK New Year's Eve Costume Ball...

Registration

Though pre-registration for the NYE Costume Ball is now closed, you can still register at the door for just $15. This is a cash-only event, so be sure to hit the ATM before you get in line to register. (The food and drink stations inside the dance hall will be cash-only as well, so be sure to bring enough for the whole evening. And don't forget that there's an ATM in the hotel lobby if you run out.)

The Hotel

It's not too late to book a hotel room at the Marriott for the low price of $69 for a double-occupancy room. The first 100 people to book a hotel room will be entered in a drawing to stay for free on the night of the dance.

Parking at the Marriott will be free—even overnight.

Dress Code

Because the NYE Costume Ball is a formal event, all those present will be required to be wearing either formal attire or a costume. "Formal attire" means no T-shirts, jeans, or tennis shoes (i.e. no street clothes). If you're in costume, however, the costume itself need not be formal—it is, after all, a costume ball.

Because we require that you be in formal attire or a costume, anyone that shows up in street clothes will be turned away at the door, so please dress up!

Hours of Operation

The NYE Costume Ball will officially run from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM, but our friendly neighborhood DJ—DJ Bullock—may extend the ending time if there's enough energy left in the room when 1:00 rolls around.

The registration desk—for both will-call and on-site registration—will be open from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Our charity booth will follow the same hours.

Our resident con photographer, Chris Gilstrap of CG Photography, will have a photo booth set up from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM. He may re-open it after midnight if there are people who want some last-minute, late-night photos.

The Trading Post (the hotel's gift shop) will be open until 11:15 PM. The Lift (the bar and restaurant in the atrium) will be open until 2:00 AM.

Wristbands

Instead of badges, we'll be issuing wristbands to all attendees. If you're 21 or older, you'll get a special wristband that lets us know you're old enough to drink. Be sure to bring your valid photo ID, though, because no one gets a 21+ wristband without showing us an ID—even if you look older than 21. Anyone under 21 (and anyone unable to produce a valid, state-issued photo ID) will get the standard wristband.

The hotel will also be providing a wristband for all those staying in hotel rooms. If you're not wearing a hotel wristband, you won't be allowed up to the hotel rooms, so be sure each person staying in your room gets one. The hotel will be giving these wristbands out at the hotel check-in desk.

Because there's a wristband for attending the NYE Costume Ball and a wristband for the hotel room, some attendees will need to wear two wristbands. Those not staying at the hotel on New Year's Eve will only need to wear the one.

Pre-Register for NDK 2010

If you haven't already pre-registered for NDK 2010, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. We'll be accepting pre-registrations for NDK 2010 in the atrium next to the NYE Costume Ball registration, so bring along some extra cash to take advantage of the pre-registration discount.

Policies

Please keep in mind that this because this is an official NDK event, all of our normal rules apply. That means we'll still be enforcing our weapons policy, our anti-harassment policy, and our costumes policy. We'll be peace-bonding all weapons, just like at the convention, so be sure to visit Ops in the atrium if you're bringing any weapon props.

Alcohol

A large number of our attendees are under the drinking age and we want this to be a fun, safe environment for people of all ages. Because we'll be serving alcohol inside the dance hall, we ask that everyone be responsible when it comes to the handling and consumption of alcohol.

We have zero tolerance for underage drinking. If we catch a minor drinking, or anyone providing a minor with a drink, we'll turn the matter over to the authorities. Anyone caught engaging in such activities will also be permanently banned from NDK and all future NDK events.

We'll also be involving the authorities in any instances of drunk driving or drunk and disorderly conduct. If you abuse alcohol at the NYE Costume Ball, your night probably isn't going to end well...

Talk Amongst Yourselves

And finally, don't forget that we've got a discussion thread going for the NYE Costume Ball (if you'd like to ask us any questions about the NYE Costume Ball, that's where to do it), as well as a thread where you can discuss your costume plans.
